Alternativa sensível: a experiência estética perante os dispositivos de captura da atenção. Eduardo Pellejero Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte

Na elaborada (e ao mesmo tempo comum) modulação do tempo e da atenção que tem lugar na experiência estética, se produz uma desconexão dos meios para os fins, que não refresca o nosso olhar sem renovar o mundo. Isso significa que a experiência estética promove uma desreificação de nós e do mundo, uma volatilização do prático inerte, mesmo se nem sempre nem a maior parte das vezes conduz à crítica do dado. Somos ainda capazes de nos fazer uma ideia de tudo o que podem significar uma sensibilidade, uma imaginação e uma razão libertadas de todas as instâncias, às que habitualmente se encontram indexadas — as telas, a monetização, o consumo? A partir de algumas propostas de Georges Perec, Yoko Ono e John Cage, procuraremos explorar essa via que, tentando restituir o real perdido e os laços sensíveis com o que nos rodeia, coloca a experiência estética como uma alternativa possível ao sequestro da atenção pelas redes e à contemplação fascinada da nossa própria destruição.

Conferência de estética 'On the Grounds of Artistic Rights' por Nemesio Puy

Artworks are taken to be a special kind of artifacts: their authors deserve some special rights over them that are not typically given to the authors of other kinds of artifacts. Known as the artist’s moral rights, they are assumed to be grounded in a special bond holding between the artwork and its author. A widespread explanation of this ground, both in legal and artistic contexts, is the Hegelian-romantic emotivist theory of authorship, which sees artworks as an extension of the artist’s personality. Trying to avoid the epistemic and metaphysical obscurities of this approach, alternative views of artistic authorship have been proposed in recent philosophical debate. However, all of them agree on a specific characterization of the alleged special bond between the artist and her work: they see the artwork is an intentional expression of its author. Assuming this framework, the fundamental question I will consider comes as follows: what makes the bond artist-work, characterized in those terms, so special as to be the justification of artists’ moral rights? I will argue that the special bond is neither valuable in itself nor in terms of other kinds of values, like irreplaceability, uniqueness and qualitative rarity. Alternatively, I will explore the possibility of the value of the special bond stemming from the value of its relata. The strategy of inheriting the bond’s value from seeing artists as a special kind of authors will be revealed as unfruitful as well. Consequently, the question about the value of the special bond will turn out to be a question about the value of artworks. An examination of this question will conclude that, only if artistic value is characterized as a final and intrinsic value, a normatively substantive ground for the special bond, and hence for artistic rights, can be found. A rejection of this approach would force us either to see artists’ moral rights as a groundless and unmotivated notion or to radically rethink the theories of artistic authorship.

History of philosophy seminar: Analysis, decomposition, and the context principle

There is an apparent tension within Frege’s theorizing regarding the question whether thoughts can be analysed in different ways. Michael Dummett famously sought to resolve this tension by distinguishing between two kinds of analysis on his behalf: analysis proper, which is unique, and decomposition, which is not. More recently, James Levine has argued that this distinction ought to be attributed, not to Frege, but to Russell. In this talk, I will defend Dummett’s interpretation of Frege from Levine’s critique, and argue that the real difference between Frege’s and Russell’s conceptions of analysis ultimately concerns the context principle.

Some Problems of Normal Form in Logical Metainferentialism

In “Logical Metainferentialism” (Ergo, forthcoming), Dicher and Paoli develop a theory of harmony for metainferential calculi in the FDE family, including ST. They identify a certain normal form—called there structurally atomic–analytic synthetic (SAAS) normal form—as the mark of harmony. A proof is in SAAS normal form iff it is structurally atomic (the structural rules apply to/produce only atomic formulae) and analytic–synthetic (all applications of elimination rules precede all applications of introduction rules). In “Sequent Calculi for First-Order ST” (JPhiLog, 2024), Paoli and Prenosil introduce a sequent calculus for ST employing generalized elimination rules for the quantifiers. In this talk, I present a calculus for ST in which all elimination rules are in general form, and I discuss which normal forms can be identified for this calculus and their significance for metainferential harmony.
