The aim of the conference is to analyse the use of writing by women and their participation in the different expressions of written culture in the Roman West. Its goal is to create a multidisciplinary forum, open to researchers working from diverse perspectives. The topics addressed include epigraphy and female self-representation, the carmina latina epigraphica, women’s literacy in Italy and the provinces, iconography, the interpretation of literary sources, and comparative studies with other contemporary regions.
The event is co-organised by UNIARQ - Centro de Arqueología da Universidade de Lisboa and the Spanish project Escritura Cotidiana. Alfabetización, Contacto Cultural y Transformación Social en Hispania Citerior from the University of Zaragoza, with the collaboration of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Hiberus Research Group, the Institute of Historical Heritage of the University of Zaragoza, and the Museum of the City of Lisbon.
The conference will take place at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and at the Lisbon Museum in the Palácio Pimenta on the 21st and 22nd of November, 2024.
