Descrição: Light serves as a foundation for both scientific discovery and medical recovery, enabling the development of targeted remedies through photoactivated medicines and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Photomedicine is a rapidly expanding multidisciplinary field that encompasses dermatology, oncology, cardiology, radiology, surgery, and circadian rhythm. It investigates the biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, specifically in the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and infrared regions, to diagnose and treat both systemic and localized diseases. However, the use of light for therapeutic purposes needs to be carefully consider, for example, excessive UV radiation is a major contributor to skin cancer. As a result, photobiology research is important since it aims to clarify how living things interact with light and assess the biological effects.
Observações: The goal of this two-week internship is to introduce young minds to the transformative benefits of photobiology in medicinal chemistry.
Week 1: We begin by the fundamentals of photomedicine and how it is increasingly influencing clinical practices. Also, these sessions will discuss how light interacts with the body at a molecular level to tackle complex diseases. Followed by a laboratory safety orientation session and laboratory visits.
Week 2: The experience moves into the hands-on research, taking place in the photochemistry and photobiology laboratory. Participants will focus on performing experiments in lab, analyze their data, and engaging in scientific discussions.
This internship will be taught in English.
