The SWIMCRAB has a reddish flattened
carapace with bright blue zones, covered
with short, brown dense hair and red eyes.
It is found in the Northeast Atlantic and
Mediterranean, where it inhabits rocky bottoms,
from the coast down to 70 m of depth. It feeds
mainly on brown algae, bivalves and crustaceans.
It spawns between January and July, with
a sharp peak in the spring.
It is captured in cage traps (basket traps).

The word “puber” in the swimcrab’s
scientific name refers to the characteristic
short, dense, brown hair that covers its body,
giving it a velvety texture.
