The SEA BASS has an elongated silver-grey
body with blue or green reflections.
It is found in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean,
where it inhabits the estuaries as
a juvenile, supporting low salinity waters. The
adults inhabit waters down to 100 m of depth.
Juveniles form schools together with other
species while the adults live alone.
It feeds on crustaceans, fish and molluscs.
It spawns from January to April.
It is fished with trawls and gillnets. It is the
third most commonly produced species in
aquaculture in Portugal after the turbot and
the gilt-head seabream.

The sea bass can be confused with
the spotted sea bass (Dicentrarchus punctatus),
but only as a juvenile, because the spotted
sea bass does not reach the same size as
the sea bass. These fish can be distinguished
by the black spots that are only present on the
flanks of the spotted sea bass.
