THE DAY SCIENCE TOOK THE STREETS...

Inspired by Zeca Afonso’s song, this phrase reinforces the ideas of joy, life and the future. This is Ciência Viva’s campaign to mark the 50 th  anniversary of the 25 th  of April.

In 1970, 26% of the Portuguese population was unable to read or write. Today, that reality only affects 3% of the Portuguese. In the 70s, only 1% of the population over 20 years old had completed college. Today, 45% of adults between 30 and 34 years old have a degree.

Progress in education were particularly significant for women, an ever-growing presence at Universities. They are 10% of the 86 PHDs attributed in 1975. Today, they represent 50% of the about 2300 PHDs completed every year.

In the years that followed the Carnation Revolution, national scientific articles cited abroad rounded the 200, and in 1974, there were 5 patents issued. In 2023, scientific publications round the 20 thousand, and the number of patents passed the 150.

You can participate in the activities of the Ciência Viva Science Centres Network on this platform. The carnation is the symbol of the military coup that brought Portugal its democracy. You can plant carnations anywhere you would like, and share them on your socials, with this app of Augmented Reality (AR), by using the QR Code. All you must do is point your cellphone camera, tap a spot of your choice, and watch them grow.
