Discovering the deep ocean
Secondary schools will discover the deep ocean by participating in activities included in a scientific project that involves american institutions, like the Ocean Technology Foundation (OTF) and the University of Connecticut, and portuguese institutions, like Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (Centre of Marine Sciences of the Algarve),Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (Autonomous University of Lisbon) and Instituto Hidrográfico (Hydrographic Institute).
The SEMAPP project - Science, Education and Marine Archeology Program in Portugal – aims to study archaeology, sea biology and geology of the Portuguese coast, as well as to introduce new technologies to study the ocean.

An afternoon “Discovering the Deep Ocean” on World Oceans Day -2005
On June 8th, Ciência Viva celebrated the World Oceans Day promoting the session “Discovering the Deep Ocean”. The teachers and some of the students that visited the ship “Shultz Xavier” and the scientists involved in the project SEMAPP, prof. Teresa Cerveira Borges (CCMar/UAlg) and Dr. Mário Ferreira (CEMar/UAL), participated in this event. There were also presentations by Cmte Gouveia Melo, a specialist in submarines of the Portuguese Navy, and by Aurélio Faria, a SIC journalist that made a piece that involved SEMAPP.

Visit to the ship “Shultz Xavier”
The winners of the contest “Discovering the deep ocean” have participated on the SEMAPP’s expedition on the 17th April 2004. The day started really early, as the ship sailed from Portimão at 6h30 a.m., but it was a day full of activities and new experiences. One of the students, Joana, dived for 30 minutes in the Delta, a unique experience.
For this day, the Portuguese Navy has also made available a small
patrol boat for back-up.
The commented photos illustrate this day.

Contest: Discovering the deep ocean
Three pupils and their teacher will have the opportunity to participate in the expedition in Portimão’s canyon. Students will spend a whole day onboard the research vessel as part of the scientific staff and will have the possibility of diving in the submersible.
To select the pupils that will be part of the expedition for one day in Portimão, students were invited to participate in the contest “Discovering the deep ocean”, a contest about marine sciences and underwater technologies.
