The MONKFISH, very similar to the Black-
-Monkfish (Lophius budegassa), has a body
characterized by broad, flattened head, dark
back and lighter belly.
It is found in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean
where it dwells on the seabed down
to 500 m. It feeds mainly on fish and cephalopods.
It spawns from February to July, at which
point the female releases up to 1 million eggs in
a gelatinous cord that can be up to 10 m long.
It is fished with trawls and gillnets.

The monkfish is a poor swimmer;
on its head is has a modified spine called an
esca that works as a fishing rod attracting
the fish on which it feeds.
