Science is the basis of our increasingly urban society. According to United Nations estimates, by the year 2010, more than 50% of the world’s population will live in cities.
The incorporation of Science into the day-to-day lives of these people will take on greater importance for their development and sustainability.
Science in the city (Ciência na cidade) is a Ciência Viva-supported project which aims to include science in our cities’ cultural programmes and the cities of Évora, Estremoz, Tavira and Guimarães have already joined.
In each city, the public will be invited to discover the scientific and technological development present in our heritage, scenery and even gastronomy over the passage of time.
Science in the city is being carried out in conjunction with other European countries through the ESCITY (Europe, Science & the City) project, whose objective is to create a common strategy to promote the scientific culture on cities.
